Investigation of mechanical behaviour of hemp fibre yarns by experimental and numerical analysis

Natural fibre composites are emerging as the alternative of synthetic fibre composites in many applications due the high-energy consumption, limited recyclability, high cost, etc. of synthetic fibres. In Europe, hemp fibre is one of the cheapest and easily available bast natural fibre, which is being attracted by researchers and automotive part manufacturers. The mechanical behaviour of hemp fibre as reinforcement in composites structures depend on the behaviour of each fibre yarns. The aim of this study is to investigate experimentally and numerically the mechanical properties of single hemp fibre yarns. Uniaxial tensile tests of single hemp yarn specimens were performed using tensile machine. The load-displacement curves response were used to characterize the mechanical properties of yarn using inverse optimisation method by integrating Abaqus, Matlab, Python and user subroutine material UMAT. Tensile test with hemp fibre yarn orientated in different angles were performed is static and fatigue.
