Abstract
Synthetic fibre composites are being replaced by natural fibre composite in many applications due to the less-energy consumption, high recyclability, less cost, etc. of natural fibres. Hemp fibre is one of the cheapest and readily available bast natural fibre in Europe which is being attracted by researchers and automotive part manufacturers in the past decades. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of hemp fibre fabrics experimentally and numerically. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed on hemp fibre fabrics specimens in different fiber angles in static and fatigue analysis. The load-displacement curves response is used to optimise the mechanical properties of hemp fabric by using inverse characterisation approach and integrating Abaqus, Matlab, Python and user subroutine material UMAT. All these studies gives a fair idea about the mechanical behaviour of hemp fibre fabric and strengthen the concept of hemp fibre as reinforcement in composites in many applications where a high stiffness per unit weight is recommended.
