Method for characterization and enhancement of 3D printing by binder jetting applied to the textures quality

Purpose This paper aims to present a technical approach to evaluate the quality of textures got by inkjet during the binder jetting in 3D printing on powder bed through contours detection in order to improve the quality of surface printed according to the result of the assembly between inkjet and granular product. Design/methodology/approach The manufacturing process is based on use of Computer Aided Design and a 3D Printer by binder jetting. Image processing measures the edge deviation of texture on granular surface with the possibility to implement a correction in active assembly through a Design For Manufacturing approach. Example application is presented through first tests. Findings This approach observes a shape alteration of the printed image on 3D printed product, the work used the image processing method to improve the model according to the Design For Manufacturing approach. Originality/value The paper introduces a solution to improve the texture quality on the 3D printed product realized by binder jetting. The Design For Manufacturing approach proposes an active assembly by compensating the print errors in upstream of product life cycle.
